Social Media Etiquette Project- WK

On October 29th 2024, American fitness and finance influencer Andrew Tate made an inflammatory series of racist tweets in response to an Indian musician announcing his tour dates for the year. Diljit Dosanjh posted a sweet video of him interacting with his fans to announce his tour date. Little did Diljit know that a known to be insensitive influencer was about to make an extremely racist comment and spark up a conflict underneath Diljit's post that would ruin Tate's reputation for good.

After being called out for his racism, Tate doubled down on his insensitivity and continued with inflammatory tweets against Indian people. Going on to say "I will let my daughters do anything besides marry a dirty Indian." (X 10/29)

  1. After reading, to me, social media etiquette refers to the guidelines and ideal behaviors that are polite and considerate of others online when interacting on social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook.

  2. This problem could have been avoided if Andrew Tate had admitted that he was insensitive and apologized after the initial tweet. It wouldn't have solved the problem but it could have been a lot less detrimental to his career had he stopped after the first remark. Instead, Tate doubled down and continued his insensitive rampage, ensuring that he had no fans left in India and a tainted public image.

  3. In order to rectify this situation, Tate would have had to make a direct apology to Diljit and his fans, in addition to a generalized apology to the good people of India who did not need this stain on their lives right now.

  4. In my opinion, Tate could have changed the wording in his tweet so that It was taken more as a joke than as an inflammatory remark. Tate, who's already known for speaking his mind, could have tried to rephrase the remark so that people took him less seriously. But, unfortunately for his career, the tweet was all too serious and he doubled down on it.

  5. If I found myself in this position, I would fly out to India and request to meet with Diljit so that I could make a personal apology to him and his team of people. Then, I would do my best to get on a source of Indian news media whether it was a news broadcast or a podcast and give out that general apology I had mentioned earlier. I would try to clear my name among the Indian people and tell them they have every right to hate me but I'd admit to my grave mistake and ask for forgiveness. Obviously, Andrew Tate's career has suffered as a result of this and as of today has 800,000 less followers on X than he did at the time of this tweet.
